To introduce students to the design of mass housing within the urban context taking into account socio-cultural aspects, to familiarize students with site planning issues standard codes in high density housing and to encourage innovative idea and develop rational decision making process in solving mass urban housing problems.

Understand and apply the importance of spatial organization, formal and informal human activities into space planning in their design.

The studio design project will be exercise in the form of a comprehensive design project to design a housing settlement with common facilities building within an urban context.

Emphasis will be given on the human spatial need that conforms to the functional requirement of the activities intended and to fulfil to social and cultural needs of the community. Aside the communal issues of the housing settlement, the project must also address the climatic issues of the locality in order to achieve appropriate building for the intended purpose and comfortable spaces for the occupants.

This exercise will also emphasize the concept of sustainable community and defensible spaces by focusing an various approaches in designing housing settlement with secured communal spaces.

As in the previous semester’s design studio, the design process will also follow 3 stages, namely: first brief development and site analysis; secondly, precedent studies/case studies/visit to similar project and lastly, design proposal with basic technical studies.

Submission shall comprise a set of graphic presentation and technical report describing the scheme. Each student will present his/her scheme to a panel of assessors that consists of full time staff and architects.
